2014 Bear Valley Telemark Festival

Metamorphosis Update: After 17 fantastic years, The Bear Valley Telemark Festival is in chrysalis stage for a year and will reappear as the Bear Valley Freeheel Festival in 2014. We apologize for our absence during this developmental process BUT we look forward to seeing you at the new event next year. In the meantime check out the MAS Telemark Ski School and the Bear Valley Adventure Ski Race on March 2nd, 2013.

2012 Bear Valley Telemark Festival top

Due to early season low snow conditions the 16th Annual Bear Valley Telemark Festival is rescheduled for March 23-25, 2012. Don't fret the long-term weather forecasts are indicating a return to wet and stormy weather about the middle of February so we are anticipating a deep snowpack by the end of March. So mark your calendar, adjust your schedule and get ready for three days of professional clinics, free-skiing adventures, live music, banquets, demos, backcountry skiing, tons of prizes and of course, lots of fun.

New at the Bear Valley Telemark Festival will be the Bear Valley Adventure Ski Race on Saturday, March 24th which is open to telemark, randonee and splitboarders.

Friday - March 23, 2012 top

Friday signals the beginning of the festival with full day telemark lessons at the ski resort followed an evening of pizza, brew and music in the village.

Full Day Telemark Workshops with video- $85
9:30 AM - 3:30 PM (Beginning-Expert)
Spend the day learning from the best instructors in the business and raise your skiing skills to the next level! After a morning warm-up run, groups are formed into similar abilities. Instructors focus on telemark skill development and personal feedback.

New this year a video analysis segment will be included in all lessons weather permitting. After lunch groups switch instructors and continue building and practicing skills. Often participants claim Friday to be the most valuable in terms of getting the most personalized instruction.

Apres Ski & Dinner - $30 / $10 youth
Doesn't matter if you are just pulling into town or have been on the slopes all day, festival goers are encouraged to join the evening festivities at the Sky High Pizza & Pub in Bear Valley. Relax, refuel and unwind with other festival goers with some tasty pizza, salad, New Belgium brew and local wine. This year we are serving a classic "All-You-Can-Stuff Pizza & Salad Bar" with fresh ingredients supplied by Outer Aisle Foods.

Then get ready for "Cedar's Open Mic!" So bring your talents, a song or two, and get ready to groove into a traditional acoustic/lightly amplified 'open mic' format with other festival participants. Potential jammers should contact Cedar with any questions.

Saturday - March 24, 2012 top

Saturday is the big day with lessons, adventures, races, a parade and demos followed by the grooviest freeheel party of year.

Instructional Clinics - $30/2hrs
Throughout the day a variety of 2 hour telemark clinics are happening. Each clinic is specific to skier ability and topic. Participants sign-up for clinics on Saturday morning at the registration desk. Sample clinics and schedule from last year

Telemark Adventures - $20/2hrs
Casual groups guided around the resort by local skiers in search of the best snow. Include a joke or two and these adventures will give you a better understanding of the Bear Valley vibe.

Demos Pass- $10
Sample telemark skis and boots from many equipment companies. Demos passes are included with festival lessons but if you only want to demo gear then getting the Demo Pass is the way to go.

Costume Parade & Contest - Free
Back by popular demand we are hosting an "on-snow" costume extravaganza. Prizes will be awarded for creativity and ability to strut your stuff.

Home Run - Free
Strong intermediate skiers and above are welcome to join festival instructors at the top of the mountain at the end of the day for a group / guided ski run back to the Bear Valley Village (conditions permitting).

Banquet - $50 / $20 youth
This is the most celebrated freeheel party of the year and not to be missed. Appetizers, drinks, dinner, slide show, prizes, live music and dancing generate an infectious vibe that make it hard to stay seated.

MAS strives to serve the best food with swift service and a eye to sustainability by providing fresh local food, durable plates, silverware, cloth napkins, and recycling. After dinner settle into a short movie or slide show before we launch into our monstrous prize giveaway.

Just when you thought the evening couldn't get better, it does! This year's band is a derivative of Quartet Minus One with their "Gloves vs. Glasses" project. With 8 members strong, featuring a 3-piece horn section we know the dancing floor is going to hopping!

Proceeds from the evening benefit the Sierra Avalanche Center.

Each year a special group of people help us run the festival in exchange for food, lodging, events and goodwill. From serving food to sitting at the registration desk these volunteers know how to hustle with a smile. While most staff return year after year we typically have a few spots for enthusiastic and motivated volunteers. If you are interested in becoming part of the team please contact us.
