What is Telemark Skiing?

The MAS Telemark Ski School is California'a premeire resource for telemark instruction and the only ski school dedicated to freeheel instruction. Through a partnership with the Bear Valley Mountain Resort (BVMR) MAS is able specialized and focus on the skills and challenges of freeheel skiing while utilizing the chairlifts to maximize your learning experience. The MAS Telemark Ski School is simply the best place raise your telemark skiing skills.

The mission of the MAS Telemark Ski School is simple: to help people make better turns. MAS offers a variety of programs to suit the beginning as well as the expert skier. All lessons require advanced reservations, so please contact MAS at your earliest convenience to schedule your telemark ski lesson.

All MAS ski instructors are certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA). Through the training of the PSIA, MAS is able to provide the best telemark ski instructors in the business. We think you will notice the difference.

What is Telemark Skiing?

The telemark turn is easily recognized as the skier separates their feet, one foot forward, one foot back with the heel raised. Telemark skiers use specialized boot and bindings which enables the heel of of the boot to rise off the ski. This is why telemark skiing is also called "freeheel" skiing. Today many alpine skiers turn to telemark skiing to raise their skiing skills and/or provide a new challenge at the ski resort.

An experienced telemark skier is a beautiful and exciting sight. The blend of body positions keeping the freeheel skier in a constant state of motion, utilizing balance, grace and power. However these skills are not easily learned and sometimes counter-intuitive to the veteran alpine skier or snowboarder.
