2016 Bear Valley Freeheel Race Series

The Bear Valley Freeheel Race Series is three separate ski mountaineering events which tackle a different course for each race. Come for one, come for all, just come and treat yourself to an alpine adventure. Doesn’t matter if your a seasoned backcountry traveler, or new to the scene, this event is intended to challenge and inspire both skiers and splitboarders.

About the Race & Series

Each Bear Valley Freeheel Race follows a traditional ski mountaineering format with “… a timed event that follows an established trail through challenging winter alpine terrain while passing through a series of checkpoints. Racers climb and descend under their own power using backcountry skiing equipment and techniques” (USSMA).  Prizes will be awarded for each race, including accumulative rewards for those participating in all three races.

Divisions:
Elite – lightweight ski mountaineering racing gear
Heavy Metal – traditional telemark, and alpine touring
Splitboard – splitboard gear
40 & Over – special recognition

Mandatory gear: racers must carry this equipment throughout the race and be prepared for an inspection the morning of the event.
